EMPOWERING FITNESS PROFESSIONALS

Dr. Tom Walters Interview:
Know the Red Flags

By Dr. Spencer Lalk | Published: Janurary 26, 2024

In the USA, the more than 300,000 professionals across physical therapy, chiropractic, athletic training and personal training are all dedicated to helping their clients and patients move better and pain free.

When these pros collaborate, it can be a formula for optimal care and outcomes.

I had the opportunity to discuss with Dr. Tom Walters (with Glen Cordoza) his new book, “Rehab Science,” and learned just how transformative this collaboration can be. Dr. Walters is a board-certified orthopedic physical therapist who specializes in the treatment of pain and movement disorders. He is the founder of Rehab Science and dedicates his time to teaching people about human movement, pain, and how to most effectively recover from injury.

In this post, I’ve provided actionable takeaways from our conversation that can benefit any movement health professional:  personal trainers and physical therapists alike!

Key Takeaways for Fitness Professionals:

1. Start with the Red Flags:

  • As a fitness professional, your first stop should be the “red flags” chapter. Understanding these warning signs is crucial. While you're not diagnosing, your ability to recognize when a medical referral is needed can be life-saving.

  • ACTION: Know the Red Flag checklist:

    • Unexplained weight loss

    • Pain that does not change with movement or position

    • Numbness or tingling

    • Shortness of breath or chest pain

    • Unusual swelling or joint pain

2. Understand the Value of Your Role:

    • Recognize your pivotal position in the healthcare continuum. Musculoskeletal health is one of the leading drivers of healthcare costs–you are in a position to help keep individuals healthy, and lower our nation’s healthcare costs!

    • ACTION: Pursue continuing education to hone your impact on long term musculoskeletal health, and know the value of your assessment and exercise/rehab program. (My personal tip: Read Dr. Walter’s book and use the best tools and technology available to supplement your practice!)

3. Expand Your Toolkit with Therapeutic Exercises:

  • In addition to honing your ability to recognize problems, Dr. Walter’s book is a guide to action. Expand your knowledge of therapeutic exercises, stretches, and soft tissue mobilizations to address common issues like back pain.

  • ACTION: Integrate therapeutic exercises from the book into your routine practice, tailoring them to each client’s needs.

4. Learn When to Use Specific Exercises:

  • Knowing a variety of exercises is great, but understanding when to use them is even better. Dr. Walter’s book teaches you how to choose.

  • ACTION: Reflect on your exercise programs in the context of the client's baseline situation and stage, using the book as a guide.

Why "Rehab Science" is a Must-Read:

  • Bridge Knowledge Gaps: Whether you're a seasoned fitness professional or just starting, "Rehab Science" provides the knowledge and practical strategies to identify critical health symptoms and apply therapeutic exercises effectively.

  • Enhance Client Care: By integrating the book's insights into your practice, you'll not only improve your clients' outcomes but also contribute to a more sustainable healthcare system.

  • Become a Key Player in Healthcare: Embrace your role as a crucial part of the healthcare continuum. The book equips you to make informed decisions, potentially saving lives and guiding clients through their recovery journey.

"Rehab Science" is not just a book; it's a resource that empowers you to make a real difference in your clients' lives. By bridging the gap between physical therapy and personal training, Dr. Tom Walters provides a roadmap for a more collaborative, informed, and effective approach to musculoskeletal health. Transform your practice, enhance your professional development, and contribute to a healthier community by embracing the invaluable insights from this book.
